It was announced Monday that at 28 years old, Alexander Wang has been named creative director at the Parisian fashion house Balenciaga. Let the trumpets sound. He is the first person of Asian descent to reach these ranks. I love seeing talented people breaking down barriers.
Wang is "deeply honored to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have such great admiration and respect for." Isabelle Guichot, CEO of Balenciaga, believed Wang was the best man for the job. She says, "We wanted someone with global thinking, a citizen of the world, and someone who could understand the digital world and the direction of fashion and retail tomorrow."
Wang's New York based signature collection will continue while he is at Balenciaga. He is best known for creating edgy, yet easy to wear street wear and has become widely popular in recent years.
At Balenciaga, Wang will oversee womenswear and accessory design, naturally, seeing as though he won Council of Fashion Designers of America awards in those categories and Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2009. He'll also oversee menswear and he'll help craft Balenciaga's overall image.
Sidenote: Doesn't Alexander Wang look like a pleasant Asian woman? Am I wrong for this? He's so adorable to me.
