Black in the Day: Betty Davis.

Black History Month has inspired me to start a new year-round series highlighting influential, stylish African Americans from back in the day. I wanted to debut this series with funk queen Betty Davis. She was a model, funk singer, writer, and all around badass. I mean, look at these pictures.

Davis recorded 4 studio albums and was briefly married to jazz legend Miles Davis. She was also close with Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, and due to her sexual nature, some of her shows were boycotted by religious groups and the NAACP. Her influence can still be felt today. Because of Betty's bold, unapologetic spirit, she inspired entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso to name her online retail store "Nasty Gal", which was the title of her 1975 album.

I can dig it.
