Let's Discuss: The Carbon Copy Mafia.

Untitled #184

"Great style should invoke a conversation, make people think, and may even offend."

The wonderful thing about fashion and style is the opportunity you have to express yourself. There are endless options to showcase your personal style with fun designers, thrift stores, online shopping, etc etc. Whatever you desire isn't really that hard to find, but you have to be willing to look for it.

With that being said, this new age of social media and Internet gives us a peek into worlds and places we may not otherwise see. Inspiration level be on ten. But it also restricts many in a way. I'm ok with people recreating what they see on runways or on their favorite celebrities. But when everyone zeroes in on the same concept and totally saturates my eyeballs with non-thinkingness, it's not beneficial for anyone. Just a bunch of  carbon copies of the same look.

Once something is labeled a trend it's basically go-time to run out and find the closest thing to it so you can be on the cutting edge of fashion. But are you really trend setting when you and every other fashion conscious person look exactly the same?

"The wonderful thing about fashion and style is the opportunity you have to express yourself."

I get excited when I see people with completely original looks. Since pink coats have become the new "it" item to have, I've seen about 10 popular fashion bloggers sporting the look. It's simply unoriginal. Style is meant to be personal. If "they" weren't wearing it, would you still care? Would you be running out to find yourself a pink coat (or whatever) if someone else wasn’t wearing it first...guiding your way?

I believe fashion should excite and complement your personal style. Great style should invoke a conversation, make people think, and may even offend. It’s all about infusing yourself into the clothes and expressing yourself genuinely. I love finding people whose style inspires me. People that view fashion as an art form. You know, the ones that aren't afraid to truly stand out in a crowd. These are the real style icons.

Because there’s nothing worse than a room full of clones.

Let’s talk… What’s your take on this?

Peace.
